Miss Haberdash Mood Indigo ....
I saw a screening of Mood Indigo at MIFF (Melbourne International Film Festival) and loved it. Yes, it was too long (the latest version, due for release 12 September, is 36 minutes shorter) but it's romantic, inventive and truely original.

Miss Haberdash Chaos and Order....
Last night MIFF (Melbourne International Film Festival) screened two films at the Planetarium, Scienceworks. Escher's Universe was the entree but for an all round sensory experience Chaos and Order- A Mathematical Symphony was my pick.
Media artist Rocco Helmschen asks, does maths have a colour? does it have a sound? Heady stuff, mine was spinning by the credits.

Miss Haberdash goes to Hollywood....
Well, almost. Hollywood Costume is showing at acmi and it makes interesting viewing for fashion and film buffs alike. There's nothing like seeing the garments up close, and interviews with directors, actors and designers provide a fascinating glimpse into the industry.
But, the layout is frustrating and a challenge if you go on a busy weekend, you've been warned!

Miss Haberdash and the Great Gatsby....
It's hard not to be impressed with the new Deco Rug Collection from Catherine Martin. Highly decorative patterns drawn from the art deco aesthetic are made into luxerious hand tufted rugs.
They also star in hubby, Baz Luhrmann's next feature film The Great Gatsby. Now, if only I had the inheritance with palatial mansion or penthouse suite to go with them.
Her range of wallpapers is just as elegant. As you'd expect the styling of these images is fabulous.

Miss Haberdash recommends....
There is no better film to see this festive season than Wasteland
The artist Vik Muniz returns to his homeland of Brazil to photograph the catadores who live and work at the largest rubbish dump jardim Gramacho in Sao Paulo.
It's an emotional journey and a revelation on all sides as we follow the lives of these inspiring and resilient people.

Miss Haberdash movie....
If it's Monday Miss Haberdash is at the movies.
Last week I saw Bill Cunningham New York a moving portrait of a photographer devoted to fashion.
Now in his 80s Bill still cycles the streets of New York documenting street fashion for the New York Times. A truely uplifting film that celebrates creativity, diversity, and eccentricity!
Below, two of Bill's subjects, the fabulous Iris Apfel former interior designer, and Shail Upadhya, a former U. N. official from Nepal.

Miss Haberdash in a flap....
If you didn't know Midnight in Paris is the new Woody Allen movie. This romantic comedy is sublime, a love letter to Paris in the rain. The costume designer Sonia Grande recreates the roaring 20s with sequined flapper dresses and bobbed hair.
My favourite fashion moments from this era were captured by the illustrators at Vogue magazine.
For another trip down memory lane watch this, 100 years of fashion in 100 seconds.

Miss Haberdash at the movies, again....
The girl can't help it, Cary Fukunaga's, Jane Eyre is marvellous. It's on release in Melbourne and the big screen is the place to see it. I was transported to the barren windswept North of England, not such a stretch as that's where I grew up (but think more Coronation street terrace than Gothic mansion).
Anyway, the cast are superb, especially Aussie girl, Mia Wasikowska, who is so moving as Jane.
Here are some movie posters from the many versions that went before.

Miss Haberdash movie....
I was captivated by this beautiful image of two women sewing, and I love the traditional Chinese costume against the backdrop of modern Shanghai.
It's from the movie Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which opens in Australia this September.
As with most good things the book by Lisa See came first, so now you have time to read it, before it hits the big screen.

Miss Haberdash enjoys....
A great Melbourne weekend, starting with Africa United a film showing at the Melbourne Film Festival (MIFF). Brilliant colour, cute animation and a heart warming story. The cool sound track, "silky football skills" and enthusiastic cast make it a great family film.
The city was buzzing, partly due to Melbourne Open House which gives you a chance to go behind the scenes and see inside some iconic buildings. It's on till Sunday and worth a look.
I also saw the exhibition Paper City (part of the State of Design festival) at the Town Hall. A fascinating look at letterheads from the 1840s, all sent to the City of Melbourne. A must see for those with a font fetish! open till end of September.

Miss Haberdash goes to the movies
I'm thrilled ACMI will be showing, In the Realms of the Unreal- The Mystery of Henry Darger
It's a fascinating story, about the life and work of self taught artist, writer, and collector, Henry Darger.
I was immediately drawn to the vibrant watercolours, but underneath the decorative it's a mystery. Fragments of collage, with images taken from children's books and comics, go on dark fantastical journeys.
You can buy tickets online from ACMI.
