Miss Haberdash at the Pop Up ....

The Craft Pop Up Shop is open for business at Melbourne Town Hall. On a cloudy Melbourne day step inside and the colours sing.

An amazing mobile steals the show even office workers taking a quick lunch break stop to look. Made by Dear Plastic (a Sydney duo) the colours and shapes move in the breeze. Dear Plastic have been featured in all my favourite magazines. They've designed shop window displays and conduct workshops where collaborative making is key and sustainability their goal.

A theme also explored by Andy Walker and Gabriela Holland of Pop Plant whose concrete planters are partly made from recycled PET bottles. The work of Emma Davis is also very familiar her woven vessels are made from polypropylene, unique and beautiful. There is so much to love here, as the tag line exclaims independent, Australian and handmade!

The shop is currently open till 11 October 2014. You can't miss the creative yarn bombing outside.

Miss Haberdash Lisbon ....

Lovely Lisboa, winding streets, jacaranda trees and lots and lots of tiles (best seen at the Museu National do Azulejo). Decorative patterns in all colours cover the pavements and the building facades, I was in heaven.

You can't miss Sintra (where I took these photos) just a short train ride from the centre of Lisbon, the National Palace is stunning.

Miss Haberdash at Rose St Artists' Market ....

The Miss Haberdash blog has been resting for a few weeks! giving Miss Haberdash time to focus on her pinterest page, aagh! the demands of social media.

Just to keep me sane and create some life/work balance I went to Rose St. Artists' Market  on Sunday and chatted to real people making lovely tactile things. It was great to see new faces and smell the coffee.

If you've not been to this market it's open weekends. Grace, the cafe next door (see pic), is really cute.

Miss Haberdash at Made in Thornbury ....

My most favourite Melbourne market, Made 'n' Thornbury, Community Craft Market was on today.

Lots of lovely crafting from hand knitted scarves to original jewellery.

Two of my favourite stallholders, Paper in May (who has gift giving covered with bows, cards and stationery) and Babua-Soft Toys (really cute/fun felt creations) were standouts.

As usual the coffee was excellent and Cathie from Melbourne Epicure was on hand with delicious cakes and pastries.

Miss Haberdash Sunday ....

As a craft market veteran even Miss Haberdash has had to re-think as more markets look to attract the "small business/ shop" and stall fees go up accordingly.

I discovered Brunswick Flea on Sunday. It's held every month at 7-11 Dawson Street, Brunswick and attracts the vintage/ secondhand crowd but has a smattering of crafty stalls (funky jewellery/ macrame pot holders etc.) if you're looking to test the water and don't want to outlay too much this might be just for you.

It's grungy and all stalls are outdoors (like a real market!), but, on the plus side Melbourne food vans are all in attendance so you wont need to send out for coffee.

Miss Haberdash at St Andrews....

At the foot of the Yarra Ranges St Andrew's market is only 35km from Melbourne but a world away from inner city bustle. This is as authentic as it gets.

For people watching it can't be beat, inner city hipsters beware you'll see tribes you thought were extinct,  techno ravers (last seen at Earthcore 1992), and people who live and breath The Good Life.

It's a breath of fresh air, my take home purchases included organic veggies, a loaf of sourdough and exotic spices.

Miss Haberdash Sunday....

The Fine Design Market puts Doncaster on the crafty map! Well hardly, but I'm a sucker for a new market and they're trying hard with a good selection of makers, food stalls and music. It's situated next door to Westfield (no competition then!) on the Civic Precinct. Big cheer to Manningham City Council for supporting the crafty scene.

I'm always on the lookout for new makers and easy stand outs for me were the lovely geometric heart magnets by Miss Paperie, perfect for Valentines.

Sorry, but I'm a bit over the 'abacus' style necklace craze beloved of Melbourne hipsters. So, it was really nice to see something different, the aluminum jewellery made by BoldandStriking looked fresh and very now.

Miss Haberdash hide and seek....

The Finders Keepers market this weekend was a great success if the large Saturday crowd was any indication. Inside the Royal Exhibition Building it was cosy and hard to get up close with some of the merch! Punters spilled outside enjoying the Melbourne sunshine. It was quite a cool happening.

So much to choose from but I really liked the ceramic jewellery on display. My favourites were Erin Lightfoot, Angus and Celeste, and o design, and Emily Green.

Miss Haberdash gets crafty ....

The next Made'n'Thornbury Market is on Saturday, 15 October. With over 20 stalls selling  hand crafted goodies it's a nice way to support your local artisans and the "newbies" graduating from the Make Craft Your Business course run by Thornbury Women's Neighbourhood House.

Miss Haberdash will launch her new range of Parisian greeting cards. Dating from the 1920s these images are sure to charm, they are all finished with a machine stitched zig zag border.

Miss Haberdash paper dolls....

This Sunday the very best of Northcote was on show for High Noon Melbourne's coolest street festival for live music, art and fashion.

At the Thornbury Neighbourhood House stall, Dee of Baby Galah was in crowd control, her idea of  colour in paper dolls was a huge hit with kids and adults alike.

Which brings me to Paperdoll Review found whilst idling online, with fantastic titles like Dangerous dolls, Movie Mobsters and even Voodoo Dolls you'll be amazed- it's a little bit bonkers.

Miss Haberdash wrap up ....

Times are a changing, after seven years working in South Melbourne Miss Haberdash is moving on. Before I go, here are my favourite lunchtime haunts.

Opposite South Melbourne Market, gigi a la maison sells antique French and vintage enamelware, gorgeous, but beware of the price tags.

www.gigi.com.au
The Community Chest op shop on Bank Street still has a clutter that excites, real bargains and friendly staff.

But, South Melbourne's hidden gem is the Australian Tapestry Workshop. Producing contemporary hand woven tapestries the studio creates unique works of art. The workshop hosts regular guided tours.

Miss Haberdash gears up....

Exciting times, along with a new job Miss Haberdash will swap the crowded city commute for pedal power.

http://ridesabike.tumblr.com/
So, I've been researching the latest trends, practical and fashionable, for those on two wheels. My friend Katie of  The Bicycle Bourgeoise Trading Co. makes urban bike- riding reflective wear, and accessories. You won't be missed in her colourful tights.

Fancy footwear from the Bicycle Bourgeoise Trading Co.
Amy Carr Bottomley of Wovenspoke  has a great website, she makes stylish scarves containing reflective threads and can be found at Rose Street Artists Market every Sunday. I also like these discs made from discarded road signs, they clip to your wheel, by Trent Jansen, practical and decorative. Pedal power!

Miss Haberdash discovers....

For those in the know the Melbourne Design Market (held twice a year) lurks in the underground car park at Federation Square. Hard to find, but if you're keen to discover something new it's worth the effort.  On Sunday I discovered FOLD studio a collective of Melbourne designers and fabric drawer.

Here's a sample of Beck's cards at fabric drawer.

Miss Haberdash at market....

I saw this gorgeous poster advertising Northern Exposure 2011 on the tram.

After some detective work I found out that the designer was Marc Martin  His latest work is called “The Curious Explorer’s Illustrated Pocket Companion to Exotic Animals A-Z” and is really stunning. He's a Melbourne illustrator/ designer and uses watercolour, textas, and inks with scanned images and manipulates these on the computer.

Miss Haberdash is at the Northcote Town Hall for the four Winter Artisans Markets starting this Saturday. The market kicks off Northern Exposure so there will be plenty to do up and down the High Street. See you there!

Miss Haberdash interstate....

And what a weekend! Sydney was looking its autumn best with pavements covered in golden leaves and a bright blue sky.

My visit was timed brilliantly! to coincide with the finders keepers market at Carriageworks, what luck.  It was hard to move with so many punters desperate to get a look in first. Elana Stone (a fave) was on stage playing with her band, near perfect.

Hard to match but on Saturday we stumbled upon Newspaper Taxi where Pia Jane Bijkerk was setting up to sell copies of her new book, no surprise, but I love this shop.

Later in the day I bought a gorgeous brooch made by the Melbourne designer Emily Green and I had to go all the way to Sydney to find her.

Fridays are fantastic, I'm either in my workroom making or out and about looking for inspiration.

This week I visited my lovely stockist Ro at Ro&Co.

Miss Haberdash at market....

On Sunday North Melbourne market blew hot and cold, literally. Upstairs it was bright and sunny, the room framed by huge picture windows and an amazing light fixture!

My neighbour, Barbara of Pale Blue Door http://palebluedoor.com/ had some gorgeous childrenswear on display.

Miss Haberdash will be back at North Melbourne Market in March.
